Qualifying for the Gifted Education Programme (GEP)

See MOE’s overview of the progamme here.

1st Round Screening Test (in August)

The conducted test’s format is similar to an English exam paper, with a standard set higher than Primary 3.

2nd Round Selection Test (in October)

There are 2 components – English Paper & General Ability Test

Our objective is for parents to use these resources to nurture their children. These questions are designed in mind that children need to be exposed to more in-depth thinking. If they do not have such opportunities, would their high or gifted potential surface?  Furthermore, these questions benefit your child regardless of whether they be used for GEP preparation. These questions provide your child the skills to be a great thinker, a very important skill in PSLE and all other major exams, and in life.

It’s like being prepared for PSLE, O Level, A Level etc. If the child do not practice related questions, would they be able to differentiate their path of growth – should they be placed in IP, Express, Normal, Normal Academic, Normal Technical, polytechnic education, 2-year junior college or 3-year centralised institute course?

For any child to successfully pass the 1st Round Screening Test, it’s also a show of the child’s capability in the national cohort. It’s a gauge of your child’s standard as opposed to their peers. You are at least assured that your child is among the 4000 selected kids in Singapore. If your child did not clear 1st Round, do not despair. It’s time to relook at his/her weaknesses and brush them up for PSLE. How else do you know your child’s standing? I think this is good and responsible parenting.

We definitely agree with MOE’s view on how averse a situation will be if a child is subjected to unnecessary stress in order to clear the GEP tests. Thus, parents play a vital role in ensuring that their children are not being ‘forced’ to complete gifted worksheets or worksheets beyond their ability. The GEP provides a different path for those who truly need an alternative learning style.
