Cultivating Critical Thinking for Kids

Our range of digital books for young learners (5 to 12-year-olds) provide them the opportunity to sharpen their critical thinking skills in the area of English and Math for a start. These exercises help to improve their analytical, reasoning and logic skills.

These critical thinking skills will come in very useful when your child has to think beyond these subjects in issues relating to those tested in the General Paper (GP), university admission tests and of course, in their degree courses.

The kids trained in critical thinking also did a better job solving everyday problems (Zohar et al 1994).

What Is Critical Thinking?

It is simply the ability to think clearly and rationally about a complex idea and analyse it in a way that helps us solve problems. In-depth analysis over a problem is key to success in schools and in our careers, as it helps our society move forward with solutions to our everyday problems. Critical thinking is essential to our lives in all areas.

Critical thinking happens when children draw on their existing knowledge and experience, as well as on their problem-solving skills, to do things like:

  • Compare and contrast
  • Explain why things happen
  • Evaluate ideas and form opinions
  • Understand the perspectives of others
  • Predict what will happen in the future
  • Think of creative solutions

When and How Does Critical Thinking Develop?

Research shows that children begin to think critically at a very young age. As soon as children are able to speak in sentences, they’re ready for you to nurture the critical thinking skills that will prepare them for success in school. Whether you’re reading a book or taking a walk in the park, any time is a good time to build critical thinking.
